Why You Don’t Need to Have Played Baseball Before to Join Northants Baseball

If you’ve never picked up a bat before, that’s absolutely fine — we’ll teach you.

If you’ve ever watched baseball and thought it looked fun, but assumed it wasn’t for you because you’ve never played before, Northants Baseball wants you to think again. One of the strongest messages to come out of the club’s recent video is simple: everyone starts somewhere.

Across the team, players talk openly about arriving at Northants having no prior baseball experience at all. As one player explains, “I’d never played baseball before I came down — I just wanted to give it a go.” That willingness to try is exactly what the club is built around.

Team manager Jack is clear that prior experience is not a requirement. “We don’t expect people to turn up already knowing how to play,” he says. “If you’ve never picked up a bat before, that’s absolutely fine — we’ll teach you.” Training sessions are structured to introduce the fundamentals gradually, with plenty of time to ask questions and learn by doing.

That beginner-friendly approach is backed up by the atmosphere within the team. Players repeatedly highlight how supportive training feels, especially for newcomers. “Everyone helps each other out,” one member says. “If you’re unsure about something, someone will always step in and explain it.” It’s a club where mistakes aren’t judged — they’re part of the learning process.

Jack believes that environment is one of Northants Baseball’s biggest strengths. “Baseball can look complicated from the outside,” he explains, “but once you break it down, it’s really accessible. Our job is to make sure new players feel comfortable, supported, and included from day one.”

For many players, joining the club has been about more than just learning a new sport. It’s also about community. One player sums it up perfectly: “You come for the baseball, but you stay for the people.” Whether it’s training nights, game days, or social events, Northants Baseball offers a welcoming space to meet new people and be part of a team.

There’s also a strong message that baseball isn’t just for a specific type of person. “You don’t need to be super fit or super strong,” Jack says. “You just need to be willing to turn up, give it a go, and have a bit of fun while you’re learning.” That mindset has helped players of all backgrounds find a place at the club.

Perhaps the most important point is that taking the first step is often the hardest part. “Walking through the gate for the first time can feel daunting,” one player admits, “but once you do, you realise how welcoming everyone is.”

So if you’ve never played baseball before but you’re curious, Northants Baseball is ready to welcome you. Turn up, get involved, and discover a sport — and a community — that’s open to everyone.
