Away to the runaway leaders of the Central conference, the Northants Centurions "Gold" squad knew they were in for a stern examination — and so it proved, with Birmingham Bats taking both games of Sunday’s Division 4 doubleheader. But there was real heart in the performance, above all in a second game the Centurions chased right to the final out before falling 10–9.

Division 4 — Northants Centurions vs Birmingham Bats

Birmingham came into the day at 16–4 and sitting clear at the summit of the Central conference, and there was no disguising the gap in the tables. But a doubleheader against the best team in the division is exactly the kind of measuring stick a developing side needs — and the Gold gave a far better account of themselves than a two-loss afternoon might suggest.

Game One
NHC 5 – BIB 10 LOSS

The opener actually started brightly for Northants, who led 4–3 after two innings on the back of a lively first. The turning point came in the bottom of the third, when Birmingham pushed across five runs to seize control, adding two more in the fourth to close the game out under the run rule. The Centurions managed just two hits on the day — from Robert Kilworth and starting pitcher Simon Shaw — with Yulyn Helm’s two-run single the clear offensive highlight. Six defensive errors made an already tall task taller. Simon Shaw shouldered the pitching load and took the loss, working 3.2 innings.

Game Two
NHC 9 – BIB 10 LOSS

This was the one that will sting. Game 2 saw the Centurions at their most competitive: nine hits, plenty of hard contact, and a flat refusal to go away against the league leaders. Birmingham edged ahead early and led 8–5 by the middle innings, powered by a Daniel Bramley home run and a three-RBI afternoon from Mike Beard. But Northants kept clawing — a run in the fourth and then three more in the top of the fifth — to cut the deficit to a single run and put the tying run in reach before the final out settled it, 10–9. Jonathan Bruce led the way with three hits, Daz Burcombe added two including a double, and Yulyn Helm, Ross Barnes, Ian Buckley and Robert Kilworth all drove in runs. Max Miller started on the mound and took the loss, with Yulyn Helm coming on in relief. It’s the kind of one-run defeat this group has met far too often this season — the cruellest arithmetic in baseball — but also a genuinely encouraging measure of how close the Gold can run anyone on their day.

Right in the thick of the Game 2 fightback with a 3-for-4 day and an RBI, Bruce set the tone for a lineup that refused to lie down against the division’s best. A thoroughly deserved shout as the Gold’s man of the day.

Division 5 — Northants Centurions 2 (Maroon) vs Herts Raptors

This was one the Maroon had circled — Sunday brought East-conference leaders Herts Raptors to St Crispin’s Park for a home double-header, a proper test against the side sitting top of the table at 14–2. Unfortunately, it’s a test that will have to wait for another day: with not enough players available to field a full squad, the Maroon were left with no option but to forfeit both games.

With no side to take the field, both games were awarded to the Raptors as forfeits and recorded as the standard 7–0 results. There’s no baseball to report and no line scores to pore over — just the disappointment of a Sunday that never got the chance to happen. It’s an issue that can bite any club fielding a developing second team over a long season, and one the Maroon will be keen to put behind them quickly. The good news is that the squad is right back at it next weekend, and the focus now is simply on getting a full complement of players out and back to competing between the white lines.

Division 4 — Central Conference
Birmingham Bats stay top and stretch clear at 16–4 after their double over Northants. Milton Keynes Bucks 2 are second on 11–7. The two defeats leave the Northants Centurions on 8–12, holding third place in the conference comfortably ahead of Leicester 2sox (3–15). Third spot looks secure, and on the evidence of that second-game fightback, the Gold have the fight in them to finish the season strongly.

Division 5 — East Conference
Herts Raptors stay top and add two more to their tally, moving to 16–2, with Cambridge Monarchs second on 11–9. The two forfeits nudge the Northants Centurions 2 to 4–12, holding third place ahead of Essex Redbacks (5–13) on win percentage. A frustrating way to end the day in the table, but the Maroon remain in the mix and will be determined to get back to full strength and finish the campaign on the front foot.

A tough day all round for the club, then — two narrow defeats for the Gold and a double forfeit for the Maroon — but not one without pride. Taking the division’s best side to a single run is no small feat, and there is plenty to build on with a handful of Sundays still to play. Both squads will be back at it next weekend, and the message is a simple one: heads up, turn out in numbers, and keep competing.
